Venue: Mere Sands Wood
Date: Saturday 2nd Feb
Weather: Some Rain, cloudy and cool
The second outing of 2018 for the Preston Society took place on a cold day with 8 + 1 members meeting at Martin Mere Car Park. It was decided due to the very wet Peaty paths on the original walk over Tarlecough Moss was changed to a walk around Mere Sands Woods Nature Reserve, as this was in woodland with hides and thus would be sheltered.
Most of the hides were visited during the walk, then for lunch we returned to the Visitor centre where we were invited to use the warm centre’s study room. During lunch the warden welcomed us to the reserve and gave us some interesting information about the place.
After lunch it had brightened up slightly so we decided to do a walk north of the Rufford Moss, however, it started to rain again and we returned to Mere Sands to look at the Mere Hide where we had been informed there was a pair of Goldeneye, and a pair were seen.
Finally we walked back to the cars where afterwards most of the group retired to The Hesketh Arms for a refreshing drink and to warm up.
We salvaged the day by finding shelter from the elements and saw some good Birds.
