The Role of Blue Carbon Ecosystems in Supporting Coastal Environments, Wildlife and Human Populations
by Dr Daniel Gorman

Blue carbon ecosystems such as mangrove forests, seagrass meadows and tidal marshes are vitally important components of nearly all the world’s coastlines. They support countless species, provide vital ecosystem services, protect coastlines and trap atmospheric CO2. This talk will provide a brief introduction to these valuable habitats, discuss their historical loss, and finish with some of the optimistic activities being promoted during the UNs 2021-2030 “Decade of ecological restoration”.

The Little Ice Age in the Southeast Mediterranean
by Professor Chris Hunt

The Little Ice Age was a time of major climatic disruption between 1450 and 1850 AD. In the southeast Mediterranean the climate was so arid and food so scarce that cannibalism occurred in some of the big cities and people fled into the countryside. The halving of the rainfall had a dramatic impact on the animals and vegetation with forests replaced by scrub and steppes by desert. Amongst the general aridity there were enormous rainfall events sending flood waves up to 30 m high down the wadis.
